"Coming Apart.....", A Concerning Indictment on America

I am finishing up an important read, "Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960 to 2012". The author is concerned with the widening gap between a new upper class and a new lower class in America. He is concerned with the erosion of the America we all knew as we were growing up. I am not one for wanting to return to "the good old days" in many respects, especially as it relates to civil rights, equal rights, and such. But this book is an important work, very well researched and resourced.

As I reflect on my week, on this Friday, February 24, 2012, I had a good work week, some volunteer time at the ACC Hall of Champions, some course work at Elon University, time with my children over the phone, via email, and in pray for them (they live out of state), wonderful time with my wife, and time at the gym. I will be manning my door in church on Sunday morning. I say this, not to brag, but to reflect on where I was, and how I spent time, as it relates to what author Charles Murray discussed in his important book.

The best thing we can do for America, and the best thing we can do for ourselves, is to stay engaged with, and stayed committed to, our families, our communities, our faith, and our vocation (defined as our interests or jobs).......each of us, one person at a time. Murray reminds us, and shows us through data, that this is what built America......and this is what will sustain America. May we be about it.

The Great Babe Ruth and the Race Issue

Such a wonderful shot for a baseball fan and a lover of history. Ruth played a great deal with and against "Negros" in an era of strict segregation. This picture was taken in the '20s and Jackie Robinson didn't break the color barrier in baseball until 1947.

Below is a great historical account of Ruth related to the issue of race. Enjoy.

Both were Cubs broadcasters at some point in their careers. And both had big, great smiles and huge, uplifing personalities.

Sir Winston Churchill

He, and his alliance with FDR, likely saved Western Civilization. What a wonderful portriat.

The all-time NBA leading scorer with 38,387 points. They tried to slow him down by banning the dunk in college (the dunk was banned from 1967 to 1976). He won three consecutive NCAA national championships in spite of it. He was quite a interesting and dominate 20th century athlete.......Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently named Jabbar as Cultural Ambassador for the United States. Louis Armstrong held that position in the Kennedy administration in the early 1960s.

President Roosevelt and Vice-President Truman having lunch at the White House, 1944. Such a great photograph.

JFK / Harry S. Truman

On this day, February 13, in 1962, Harry S. Truman paid a visit to John F. Kennedy at the White House...........two giants of the 20th century.

Remembering the "Greensboro Four", On This Saturday, February 4, 2012

Let us recall with honor and respect the "Greensboro Four", Joseph McNeil, Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair, Jr. (known today as Jibreel Khazan), and David Richmond (all shown above). On this day, 52 years ago, they were seated at the Woolworth's lunch counter (they are shown above at the actual counter) in my hometown of Greensboro, NC, likely very afraid, but surely very courageous. It was a very tumultous time in downtown Greenboro during the early stages of the sit-in, but the moment was right for change to begin in America. I lived 5 blocks from downtown.

I was honored to speak with and shake hands with "The Four" on the 60th anniversary of the sit-ins and during the opening of the International Civil Rights Museum on February 1, 2010. It was a moving time for me. They are pictured today in the bottom photo, with David Richmond, Jr. standing in for his deceased father, second from left. The museum is so appropriately housed in the Woolworth's Building in downtown Greensboro. (You can find related blogs in January / February 2010 of ThePoint).

Super Bowl Sunday is about here. Amazing how it has developed into such a national event, certainly the largest TV audience of the year, by far. Eli versus Tom Brady, and the commericals, should make an very entertaining Sunday. Enjoy!

Josh Hamilton Hang-In There - Fight Hard

Here's hoping and praying that Hamilton comes off his recent relapse without impact in his continued struggle as an addict. This article contains details of the incident. Hopefully it is a temporary setback.

Those who do not know his story, you will want to google him. He is from Cary, NC and is the most talented player in the big leagues, but he struggles with addiction and was out of baseball for 3 years because of it. Above, you can see the massive amount of tattoos he acquired during the depths of his struggle. It is a compelling human interest story. He is my favorite player, by a long shot.

Josh, we are pulling for you.

Picture of the Day

This is a great picture that brings back bittersweet memories. Rob and I were at Yankee Stadium the day Mickey Mantle died, August 15, 1995. Here Rob is in Monument Park in front of Mantle's retired number. Pictured also are the four greatest Yankee retired numbers, four of the greatest in all of sports, in fact......Gehrig, Ruth, DiMaggio, and Mantle.

The trip we were on took us to Boston and Fenway Park the next day, and then on to Cooperstown , NY to baseball's Hall of Fame for a day. Quite a time and quite a trip.
